The Architecture Awakens: 8 Buildings Inspired by Star Wars

A long time ago in a galaxy an awful lot closer than you might imagine, George Lucas created a bunch of films that would suck millions of sci-fi fans across the globe into a world of extraplanetary architecture and design.

Whether you love them or hate them, there is no denying that the sillhouette of Vader, the glowing beams of Luke's lightsaber and the chrome-dome of RD-D2 are instantly recognisable features... and some of them have been cropping up in rather unexpected places across our cities.

In celebration of the release of The Force Awakens, check out these 8 buildings (well, mostly buildings) that have clearly taken inspiration from the Star Wars saga, or vice-versa...

Got one of your own? Send me your Star Wars-inspired architectural designs by sending a message via The Angry Architect Facebook Page – anyone who can find a building that channels Princess Leia's iconic double-bun hairstyle wins the internet.

Yours intergalactically,

The Angry Architect

1: The Death Star.

OMA's design for the RAK Convention Center in the UAE looks alot like Darth Vader's humble abode. Rem is clearly a Star Wars fan...

2: The Sandcrawler.

... especially since his Casa de Musica in Porto looks like a perpetually stationary Sandcrawler, perched upon a sand dune on Tattooine.

3: Darth Vader.

Luke... I am your conservatory.

4: AT-AT Walker.

The four-legged armored vehicles of Star Wars could make for some pretty impressive mobile homes... as illustrated by Lebbeus Woods in his Walking City concept.

5: Jabba the Hutt's Palace.

Did the galaxy's largest and most despicable slug get design inspiation from the Sniezka Observatory in Poland?

6: R2-D2.

A little known fact: Everyone's favourite droid (bar BB-8, of course) attends William Penn University in Des Moines, IA.

7: The Lightsaber.

The BT Tower was transformed into a giant lightsaber to mark the release of the saga on BluRay. Beautiful photoshop work here, though I pretty sure Vader prefers a red lightsaber. A travesty!

8: Jar-Jar Binks.

Which came first: the insufferable Jar-Jar Binks, or this perfectly sufferable fire hydrant? You decide.
